The History of 5 Card Stud Poker

Soon after this the deck was expanded to the present day 52 cards and the flush was introduced. The additional cards were introduced mostly to allow more players. The game was expanded and developed further during the Civil War, with many of the variants of the game being introduced then, including Five Card Stud. Poker was initially played with only one round of betting with all five cards dealt face down and no draw cards, very similar to today’s Five Card Stud game.

Poker has a mysterious past and cannot be definitely traced to a certain point in the history of card playing. It resembles a Persian game, which went by the name of NAS and may have been brought to the states via sailing ships the anchored in New Orleans. French Canadians who came down to New Orleans and helped to settle the city may have also brought poker to New Orleans. Poker, like all modern games, seem to have evolved from different games played around the world. One noted origin of poker is from the Chinese game, which makes use of domino cards. Egyptians have also been known to play a similar form of game during the 12th and 13th century. In the 16th century, there is also a game called Treasure cards, which is quite similar. Poker is one of the most popular card games in the world. This fast-paced, fun-filled game can be enjoyed by a multiple number of players. The origins of poker are shrouded in mystery though it is said to have started more than ten centuries ago. Of course, the game has evolved a lot since then.

According to a popular belief, poker was first played by the Chinese way back in the 10th century. Egyptians played an early form of the game in the 12th and 13th centuries. In Persia a version of poker called ‘Ganfija’ was played in the 16th century. The French played ‘Poque’ and it was the national game in the 18th century. The German played ‘Pochen’. Both were early versions of poker. It was the ‘Primero’ played by the Spanish from the year 1526 that is known as the ‘poker mother’ as it is the first version of the game that has direct similarities to modern poker. The concept of bluffing and calling high stakes in spite of having poor cards so that opponents would be deceived was known to the Spanish.
