"Buy-in" Definition

A 'buy-in' is the amount of money it costs to enter a poker tournament that goes towards the prize pool. There is also usually an 'entry fee' for a tournament which is money you pay to the house for running the tournament and does not go the prize pool.

For instance, if a tournament is listed as $500+$50, the $500 is the buy-in and will go to the prize pool, while the $50 is the entry fee, and will go to the house.

The amount of the buy-in and the number of chips is not always equal -- for instance, a $100 buy-in might get you 1,500 or 10,000 in chips.
